Summer Day Camps Qualify for the Dependent Care Credit

Taxpayers can claim a nonrefundable credit for a percentage of their dependent care expenses that allow them to work.  The maximum amount of expenses is limited to $3,000 for families with one child or $6,000 for families with two or more children and the expenses must relate to children under age 13. What taxpayers tend to miss is the cost of summer day camps.  Summer day camps related to computers, sports, the arts, or to improve reading, writing or study skills will qualify as expenses for children under 13.  The costs of summer school or tutoring are not eligible.  So make sure to save your receipts and include them when providing your information to your tax preparer next spring.
