Undelivered Refund Checks Top $164 Million

The IRS is looking for the rightful owners of $164.6 million in undelivered refund checks. A total of 111,893 taxpayers are due one or more refund checks that could not be delivered because of mailing address errors, meaning the undelivered checks averaged $1,471 (compared to $1,148 last year). Taxpayers can update their address with the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on www.irs.gov . Taxpayers must submit their Social Security Number, filing status, and the refund shown on their 2009 return. The tool will provide the status of the refund and, in some cases, instructions on how to resolve delivery problems. Taxpayers accessing the telephone version of “Where’s My Refund?” (1-800-829-1954) will receive instructions on how to update their mailing address. The IRS reminds taxpayers that they can avoid lost, stolen, or undelivered checks by choosing direct deposit when filing a paper or electronic return.
