Social Media & Business

Lots of people use social media. You probably use social media.  But should your business use social media?

I think the answer to this is: Maybe.

Social media, at its core, is relational and informational.  It is a great way to stay connected to your customers and an inexpensive way to share information.  The downfall with using social media in your business is the investment of time it takes to make it an effective tool.  Social media experts have discovered that using social media is effective when you put the time and effort forth to move as fast as the individuals who frequent these sites.  This means having an interesting and well put together profile, meant to grab the viewer’s attention, and posts that are meaningful and frequent to keep the viewers coming back often.   As most business owners will attest, time is precious and there never seems enough to go around.

So does this mean you should just forget about social media? No.  It is impractical for today’s business owners to ignore social media altogether.  What you should focus on is your company’s practices of customer relations and information output, i.e. how are you staying connected?  Many companies feel that their customers respond better to emails, newsletters, blogs, and in general, the company’s website.  The whole point is to cater to your current and target customers. I think the key here is to take time to evaluate your customer’s needs and how you are staying on their mind.  Then if you feel like there’s more you can do, consider social media as an option.
